Argentinian movies

Evita (1996) Dir. Alan Parker
Principal actress: Madonna
Unfortunately: You might remember: "Don't cry for me Argentina"

First of all Eva Duarte de Perón never ever sang in public to a big audience from a balcony. It's true that she was an actress before her political career after marrying Perón but I also have serious doubts if she used to sing in radio shows. The movie was the cinema version of a Broadway production made by Andrew Lloyd Weber, that's why the song takes such an important part of it.

But that's not the only "mistake" of the film; also Evita never met Che Guevara. And even if they met, when she was going to be nominated for Vice President, it was nothing important in their personal stories. At that time, he was just another middle class Argentinian boy studying in the city, and not yet leader of the Cuban revolution nor a militant in Peron's party.

Argentinian cinema deserves to be known for better films than this one. For example two Argentinian movies won the Oscar prize for the best international film; "La historia oficial" ( The official story, 1985) and "El secreto de sus ojos" (The secret in their eyes, 2010). The first one was the first movie that showed a case of illegal child appropriation in the Argentinian dictatorship. The second one is a drama mystery thriller very well narrated and with some of the best Argentinians actors.

Though, if I had to recommend a movie I really like, that would be "El hombre de al lado" ( The man next door, 2010) a real suspense movie that seems to be an Edgar Allan Poe story where everyday characters could be the creepiest creature ever. I like it so much, because it makes a good job painting the picture of the Argentinian middle class. And if you're into architecture, let me tell you that it is staged in the only Latino-American house designed by Le Corbusier.
